Scientists at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in Moss Landing found a new species of jellyfish off the Farallon Islands near San Francisco.

Here are some facts about Big Red, as they call it.

Distinctive features: A yard-wide fleshy red bell, four to seven thick arms with wartlike clusters of stinging cells.

Lives: 2,000 to 4,800 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, as well as in the Sea of Cortez, in Monterey Bay, and off Hawaii and Japan.

Population: So far, 23 have been found by researchers.
